New Year’s Resolutions: A New Pool is a Great Way to Get Fit! | Sunshine Fun
The goal to “lose weight” or to “live a healthier lifestyle” is almost always among the top resolutions that many make when the new year rolls around. It’s a new year and a new you, so if you’re one of those who resolve to get fit, who says it has to be a boring process? There are several ways to get fit in a pool, all of which are enjoyable while still giving you a great workout, leading to a healthier you.
You might cringe like the rest of us when you hear the word “cardio,” but we promise that doing so in a pool is way more fun than on a treadmill. For one, you get to stay cool because you are in the water, but the lack of apparent sweat does not mean that you aren’t working hard. To start off, try jogging around the shallow end of your pool. You might feel a little silly, but as soon as you start breathing hard and working to get one foot in front of the other, you will immediately notice how much effort you are putting into your workout.
Once you feel confident in your abilities, try going deeper into the pool. The higher the level of water, the stronger the resistance is fighting against you as you run. A buoyancy belt will help keep you upright and afloat, so all you have to worry about is getting a good workout in.
Tone Your Muscles
Aside from cardio, you can actually tone your different muscle groups in the pool. If you’re willing to invest in some equipment, you can purchase water barbells to increase resistance underwater. This exercise will help you build muscles while also increasing your heart rate for a total workout.
Without equipment and just using your pool, you can strengthen your core muscles. Simply hold onto the side of your pool and bring your knees to your chest only by using your abdominal muscles. For added difficulty, try doing this same exercise while treading water.
While you’re on the edge of your pool, bring your leg up from the side as high as you can to strengthen your leg muscles. Underwater squats in the shallow end of the pool will work your upper leg muscles and glutes. You can use your water barbells here too for increased difficulty.
Ways to Get Fit in a Pool with a Group
Yoga is known for giving you a good workout while also relieving tension. Water yoga is similar except you are performing moves underwater, which can prove to be challenging. Water ballet, water polo and water aerobics are other examples of group exercises that you can do in your pool with your friends or family to meet your healthy resolution goals.
Good, Old-Fashioned Laps
Of course, swimming laps is one of the best ways to get fit in a pool because it works many of the systems in your body – muscular, respiratory, circulatory. By learning different strokes, you can work different muscle groups, and you get to learn something new! After you build up stamina, swimming laps can actually be a lot of fun. You can time yourself to see how you are improving throughout the new year.
